Drought in Northern Kenya
Northern Kenya has been hit by the worst drought since 1965. 90% of the livestock herds have died and people are very depressed and discouraged. Many families are sharing food rations with their livestock and feeding them by hand. Cattle, goats and camels have all been affected in an area where communities are dependent on their herds as a way of life.
Thanks to the generous support of one of our donors, Kathleen Colson, Executive Director of The Boma Fund and Cows for Kids, made an inspection trip to Northern Kenya and returned on April 5, 2006. Her visit re-affirmed the conviction of The Boma Fund and Cows for Kids Board of Directors that a diversified pastoral way of life is viable and consistent with the limited resources available in the semi-arid regions of Northern Kenya. Cows for Kids will take an active part in the restocking of the herds in a few months and The Boma Fund will be working with communities to provide funds and the technical expertise for water projects and the irrigation of small scale agricultural plots. In addition, The Boma Fund will be working closely with community based organizations that are investing in entrepreneurial projects and programs.
Thanks to the generous support of individuals, families and schools that have provided funds to Cows for Kids over the past few months, we will be working with our contacts in Kenya to locate a source for livestock when it is time to restock the herds. Your Donation now will help these critical efforts as we work with the people in Karare region to rebuild their lives.
